First developed in the early 20th century, Play Therapy is a structured therapeutic approach that uses the natural language of play to help children explore and work through emotional, social, and psychological challenges.
Unlike ordinary play, play therapy is guided by a trained therapist who supports the child in addressing and resolving difficulties while building resilience and coping skills. This approach builds on the way children naturally learn about themselves, their relationships, and the world around them.
Through play therapy, children can communicate more effectively, express emotions safely, manage behaviour, develop problem-solving skills, and practice healthy ways of relating to others. Play provides a safe psychological distance from challenges, allowing children to process thoughts and feelings in developmentally appropriate ways. The Association for Play Therapy (APT) defines it as “the systematic use of a theoretical model to establish an interpersonal process wherein trained play therapists use the therapeutic powers of play to help clients prevent or resolve psychosocial difficulties and achieve optimal growth and development.”
Research consistently shows that play therapy can reduce anxiety, improve emotional regulation, enhance self-esteem, strengthen social skills, and promote overall psychological wellbeing. By combining child-led play with structured therapeutic techniques, play therapy offers a safe, engaging, and evidence-based way to support children’s emotional growth and resilience.
